In honor of National Fire Prevention Week, I sat down with our fire and design manager and asked him a few questions. Greg has been with Sonitrol of the Carolinas for 30 years! He started as an installer and now has over 20 years of experience in fire design. When it comes to putting together a fire system he is our go to guy!

Do you think it is harder to design a new fire system or upgrading an existing system?
Upgrading an existing system. You never know what you are going to run into and making sure that it meets Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) Compliance.
Why are fire inspections important for businesses?
Annual inspections are National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) code required

How often should you test your smoke detectors in your home?
According to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), smoke detectors should be tested at least once a month and batteries should be replaced at least once or twice a year.
What is done during a fire inspection?
All devices are tested, such as pull stations, smoke detectors, sprinklers, duct detectors, and horn strobes.

Don’t leave combustibles lying around
Keep fire exit pathways clear
Don’t lock fire exit doors
Have your system checked periodically
Never block sprinklers
